Hood Shield™ FR Hoodies — Certified Coverage in a Fleece Format
Bulwark FR Sweatshirts use the Hood Shield™ design — an FR fleece hoodie with a reinforced drawstring-free hood that maintains NFPA 2112 certification across the entire garment including the hood. DWR-finished FR fleece provides warmth and light weather resistance, with arc-rated styles spanning CAT 2 through CAT 4 — suitable as standalone outer layers in mild cold or as mid-layer pieces beneath heavier FR jackets.
Wearing FR Sweatshirts Correctly in Layered FR Programs
FR sweatshirts can be worn as outer layers or mid-layers, but every layer worn in a flash-fire or arc-flash environment must satisfy the program's FR requirements. Layered over an FR base layer or FR shirt, a tested combination can carry a system arc rating above the sweatshirt's standalone rating — consult manufacturer system-testing data for the specific combination. Meltable synthetics are not permitted anywhere in the layered stack.

What arc rating does the Bulwark FR sweatshirt carry? +
Sweatshirt styles span NFPA 70E CAT 2 through CAT 4 (category minimums of 8, 25, and 40 cal/cm²). Each style's ATPV is listed on its product page, and the employer's arc-flash risk assessment decides the category the role requires.

Can I wear an FR sweatshirt as a base layer under an FR jacket? +
Yes. FR sweatshirts can serve as a mid-layer beneath an FR jacket in cold conditions, provided every layer is FR. A tested jacket-plus-sweatshirt combination can carry a system arc rating higher than either garment alone — confirm it through the manufacturer's system-testing data and the employer's PPE program.
Can I wear a non-FR sweatshirt under my FR jacket? +
It depends on the fabric. NFPA 70E prohibits meltable synthetics worn beneath or over arc-rated clothing — a polyester-blend sweatshirt can melt and cause severe injuries even when the outer FR jacket performs correctly. Non-melting cotton is permitted as an underlayer but adds no arc rating and can still ignite. An arc-rated FR sweatshirt both complies and adds to the layered system's protection.
What fabric is used in Bulwark FR sweatshirts? +
Bulwark FR Sweatshirts use FR fleece finished with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) for light weather resistance. Each product page and care label states whether the style uses an inherent FR fiber or a treated FR finish, along with its NFPA 2112 certification and arc rating.
