FR Shirt Protection, Matched to the Hazard
NFPA 2112 Certified, Arc-Rated FR Shirts for Your Crew
A daily-wear FR shirt program only works when every employee's shirt is certified for the hazard. This collection gives crews in oil and gas, electric utility, and maintenance NFPA 2112 certified shirts across CAT 1 and CAT 2 — matched to the site's hazard assessment, with flame resistance engineered to remain effective through repeated industrial laundering per manufacturer care instructions. Browse: FR Work Shirts, FR Base Layers & T-Shirts, FR Polos.
NFPA 2112 Certified FR Shirts for Oil, Gas & Petrochemical Workers
Flash fires in oil and gas environments can ignite without warning when flammable vapors meet an ignition source — and workers have seconds to react. NFPA 2112 certified FR shirts are third-party tested to limit body burn and are designed to self-extinguish when the ignition source is removed. Bulwark FR's inherent fiber blends — Nomex® Essential and Ten Cate Evolv™ — build that protection into the fabric so flame resistance remains effective over the garment's life when care and laundering instructions are followed.
Arc-Rated FR Shirts for Electric Utility Linemen & Maintenance Electricians
Electric utility workers and maintenance electricians required to meet NFPA 70E arc-flash PPE categories need shirts arc-rated to their specific hazard level. CAT 1 tasks require a minimum 4 cal/cm²; CAT 2 tasks require a minimum 8 cal/cm². Bulwark FR shirts cover both categories across CAT 1–2, certified to ASTM F1506 for daily-wear arc-rated programs so the site's hazard assessment drives the selection.

What ATPV rating do Bulwark FR shirts carry? +
Bulwark FR shirts span NFPA 70E arc-flash PPE categories CAT 1 and CAT 2, which carry minimum arc ratings of 4 and 8 cal/cm² respectively. The ATPV for any specific style is listed on its product page, and the employer's arc-flash risk assessment sets the rating each task requires.
What is the difference between an FR work shirt and an FR base layer? +
An FR work shirt is a standalone outer-layer garment worn as the primary visible top — typically a button-front woven shirt certified to NFPA 2112 and arc-rated for CAT 1 or CAT 2. An FR base layer is a lighter-weight undershirt worn beneath the outer garment to add thermal comfort and contribute to the layered system arc rating. Avoid meltable synthetic underlayers — a non-FR synthetic undershirt introduces a melt-and-drip hazard, while arc-rated base layers let every layer contribute to the system rating.
Are Bulwark FR shirts NFPA 2112 certified? +
Yes. Bulwark FR shirts are certified to NFPA 2112, which requires third-party laboratory testing of the fabric and finished garment, including flame-resistance durability through repeated industrial laundering. Bulwark FR uses inherent flame-resistant fibers — Nomex® Essential and Ten Cate Evolv™ — so flame resistance is built into the fiber and does not wash out when laundered per manufacturer care instructions.
Can I wear a non-FR shirt or T-shirt under my Bulwark FR shirt? +
Not if it can melt. NFPA 70E prohibits meltable synthetics — polyester, nylon, and blends — against the skin in arc-flash environments, because a melting undershirt can cause severe burn injuries even when the outer FR layer performs correctly. Non-melting natural fibers such as untreated cotton are permitted as underlayers but add no arc rating. Many employer FR programs specify arc-rated base layers so every layer contributes protection — check your program's requirements.
What fabrics are Bulwark FR shirts made from? +
Bulwark FR shirts use inherent flame-resistant fiber blends including Nomex® Essential, Ten Cate Evolv™, and modacrylic/lyocell/aramid blends. Inherent flame resistance is a property of the fiber itself — not a chemical treatment — so it does not wash out when laundered per manufacturer care instructions. Select styles use cotton/nylon blends in heavier woven constructions for additional durability and abrasion resistance.
What arc-flash PPE category do FR shirts cover? +
Bulwark FR shirts cover NFPA 70E arc-flash PPE categories CAT 1 and CAT 2. CAT 1 requires a minimum arc rating of 4 cal/cm²; CAT 2 requires a minimum of 8 cal/cm². Styles in this collection span both categories — each style's ATPV is shown on its product page. For CAT 3 or CAT 4 protection, a layered system or heavier outer garment such as a coverall or jacket is required.
