NFPA 2112 Certified FR Base Layers for Layered FR Programs
What a crew wears under the FR shirt is a compliance decision, not a comfort one. This collection gives oil and gas, electric utility, and maintenance programs NFPA 2112 certified FR T-shirts and long-sleeve base layers across CAT 1 and CAT 2 — assigned from the site's hazard assessment, with flame resistance verified through NFPA 2112 laundering-durability testing. Why All Base Layers Must Be FR in Hazard Environments
NFPA 70E does not permit meltable fibers — polyester, nylon, and their blends — in underlayers worn next to the skin in arc-flash environments: a melting undershirt can cause severe burn injuries even when the outer FR layer performs correctly. Non-melting natural fibers such as untreated cotton are permitted as underlayers but add no arc rating. Bulwark FR base layers and T-shirts use inherent modacrylic/lyocell/aramid and Nomex® knit fabrics that are designed to self-extinguish and contribute to the layered system's protection.
Layered System Arc Ratings — How Base Layers Add Protection
When a compliant FR base layer is worn beneath an FR outer shirt, the tested combination can carry a higher system arc rating than either garment alone — which is how programs reach higher protection levels without moving crews into heavier single garments. System arc ratings are established by testing the specific combination, not by adding individual ATPVs: confirm layered ratings against the garment manufacturer's published system-testing data through the employer's PPE program. Note: FR base layers and T-shirts are designed as part of a layered system — where the hazard assessment requires outer FR garments, they are not intended to serve as the sole protective layer.

Do I need to wear an FR base layer under my FR shirt? +
Not always. NFPA 70E prohibits meltable synthetics (polyester, nylon, spandex blends) against the skin, because they can melt and cause severe burn injuries even when the outer FR layer performs correctly. Non-melting natural fibers such as untreated cotton are permitted as underlayers, but they add no arc rating. Many employer FR programs specify arc-rated base layers so every layer contributes protection — confirm requirements with the program's safety manager.
What arc rating do Bulwark FR base layers carry? +
T-shirts and base layers here span CAT 1 and CAT 2 (minimum arc ratings of 4 and 8 cal/cm²). Product pages list each style's ATPV; when pieces are layered, the system rating comes from the manufacturer's system testing rather than from adding the numbers together.
What fabrics are used in Bulwark FR base layers? +
Bulwark FR base layers use inherent modacrylic/lyocell/aramid blend and Nomex® knit fabrics. Inherent flame resistance is built into the fiber — not a surface treatment — so it does not wash out when laundered per manufacturer care instructions. Moisture-wicking and breathable knit construction provides all-day comfort for under-layer wear.
Are Bulwark FR base layers NFPA 2112 certified? +
Yes. Bulwark FR base layers and T-shirts are certified to NFPA 2112 for flash-fire protection, including industrial-laundering durability testing. Inherent fiber construction means flame resistance does not launder out when care instructions are followed.
Can I wear a cotton T-shirt under my FR shirt instead of an FR base layer? +
Under NFPA 70E, untreated cotton is permitted as an underlayer because it is non-melting — but it adds no arc rating and can still ignite. An NFPA 2112 certified FR base layer satisfies even the strictest employer program requirements and contributes to the layered system's protection. Employer FR programs may require FR base layers — check the program specification.
What styles of Bulwark FR base layers are available? +
Bulwark FR base layers are available as crew-neck and V-neck T-shirts for warm-weather under-layer wear and as long-sleeve base layer shirts for cold-weather layering. All styles use inherent FR knit fabric certified to NFPA 2112.
Can short-sleeved FR shirts be worn as single-layer protection? +
No. Short-sleeved FR tees are layering pieces — worn alone they leave the arms exposed rather than covering potentially exposed areas as completely as possible. Wear them under arc-rated outer garments, with the layered combination set by the employer's PPE program.
